On Metsu

Things looked pretty grim there for a while, as a government shut down threatened to rain on the opening of the National Gallery’s new Gabriel Metsu exhibition. The last big government shut down came during the 1995 Vermeer exhibition, and there are some who believe that public anger at not being able to see that blockbuster helped build a case for the government’s role in supporting the arts. In any case, Metsu is open for now, and you can read my review of it here.
