For some reason, it’s impossible to hide parking. Even when cities do it right and create mixed-used developments with street-level retail and parking hidden above or behind more pedestrian friendly spaces, you always know it’s there. Something about the scale of the building, and the cheap cladding that covers so many garages always gives them away. I spent some time recently thinking about parking, inspired not only by a new show at the National Building Museum, but by the National Parking Association’s annual meeting, held last month near D.C.
