African-Americans in Civil War Photographs

NPG.2002.89-1A new show, though quite small, is worth a peak into the National Portrait Gallery. The most horrifying image is the one reproduced here, one of the most galvanizing photographs made in the 19th century. When Lincoln spoke of blood “drawn” with the lash, I imagine he meant something like this, a literal writing on the body of the slave. My review.
